Hippie Lifestyle Attracts You And You Got Yourself A Caravan
Over the past few years, caravan sales have doubled if not tripled as more and more Britons are choosing to holiday in the UK rather than going abroad. Caravans are versatile and can accommodate up to 8 people if not more, so you can save a lot of money in the future by investing in one.
What about insurance for caravans though? Why should it be bought and is it mandatory?
As caravans are becoming more popular, thefts are also on the increase as a result. Some cannot afford to buy a new one and others see it as an opportunity to steal caravans, change their identity and sell them on cheap. Although it is harder to get away with caravan ringing, it still happens unfortunately. Having caravan insurance can make all the difference when it comes to finding it stolen and involvement in accidents.
It is not a legal requirement to have caravan insurance but if you need to tow it behind a vehicle on the open road, then as a minimum you will need third party insurance cover. A caravan can cost as little as £5,000 or as much as £20,000, so it has the same value as buying a new car. Insurance is very important for not just collisions that may occur but also personal property being stolen. The point here is that if you're not using the caravan and it's just sitting somewhere, then you can get away with no insurance but if you need drive the caravan on public roads, then you need to have adequate insurance cover in place.
Static caravan insurance
This insurance applies to caravans that are on a caravan site either temporarily or for a longer period. Most of the time static caravans are linked up with electricity, water and sewerage systems. Due to it being there permanently and not likely to be towed around, the insurance risks are less.
Touring caravan insurance
Touring caravans are attached to a vehicle and towed around the country either for camping or on caravan sites. Since most caravan owners like to move around a lot, the chances of an accident or other related incidents are higher.
Static and touring caravan insurance cover do vary in price; a touring caravan will attract a higher premium due to risks of collisions, accidents and incorrect loading. A static caravan will be more at risk of flooding on site and falling objects such as trees. What both of them are susceptible of is theft and this can happen at any time, whether on a driveway or on a caravan pitch.
Depending on the price difference, it may even be better to get short term caravan insurance instead as it's only used a handful of the time in a year. This then covers you only when you use it. So if it's damaged when there is no insurance on it or the caravan gets vandalised I suppose you will be liable for it.
