There will come a time in your life when you will need to have your car repaired. Although most people turn to the internet to fix minor problems, many are also attempting to fix more complex problems by themselves. Silly things such as checking your oil level, wiper fluid and engine coolant are pretty easy and basic things you can do for yourself without the need of a mechanic but other problems such as rewiring a radio and problems with headlight should be rectified by a qualified mechanic.

If you attempt to fix your car yourself and it then causes a problem later, your insurance company will not pay out as you will be liable for the damage because of the DIY that you attempted. Labour for work carried out by a mechanic can be expensive but sometimes it's better to pay for good quality work that has a guarantee than attempting it yourself and then having to end up to the mechanics garage because you made the problem worse.

Questions when repairing your car

If you ever need to go to a garage for a problem with your car, it is wise to know a little about your vehicle so you don't get ripped off or talked into something you don't understand. For example when you go for an MOT they check for specific things and run tests so if they report a problem or you fail, you should know what parts of the vehicle they have checked over. The same will apply if you have a problem under the bonnet like a strange sound or smell; familiarise yourself with the parts and what they do and where they are located. Take pictures if you want, then when you go to see a mechanic, you will have an idea of what they are talking about, There are many forums for all car makes that you can find free information regarding your vehicle and get your car repair questions answered by reputable members or experts.

When you have your car repaired, always ask for the parts that they have removed so you can check them out for yourselves. All legit mechanics should ask you if you want them and if they don't, then you may have gotten ripped off. Some mechanics are known to change 'parts' without having any actual proof of the old ones. If you know your car inside out, then you should be able to spot if any work has been undertaken.

A mechanic should always provide you with a written quote before you agree to any work; they should never carry it out then force you to pay. The only exception is when you go for an MOT - they can fail you if you refuse to have any repairs done while having the MOT as they can also be fined for letting you 'off the hook' for driving a vehicle that could endanger you and others around you.

Libraries also have manual about cars and their components so if you do not have access to a computer there are still ways you can learn about your vehicle for free. There are also websites where you can discuss your car problems and qualified mechanics can give you their opinion for free so if you want some guidance and a rough estimate of how much you are likely to spend, there are resources out there for you.
