No matter how careful you are, sometimes you just cannot escape getting dents in your car. It can happen if you didn't notice an obstruction when you were reversing or it could be that somebody bumped into you when you were parked. Most cars will have gotten a dent or two during the course of their driving lifetime but there are simple steps you can take to avoid this and even fix it yourself.

How to prevent your car from being dented?

Don't park too close to parked cars in a bay.
Don't park near lampposts or anything that would obstruct the door.
If possible, park in a garage or private gated driveway.

How to remove car dents?

Dents are usually easier to remove from plastic bumpers because you can just pop them out from the underside. They don't crack the paintwork and you wouldn't find the exact dented spot afterwards. If on the other hand you have a metal bumper, then this won't be as easy to fix.

You can save some money by fixing a dented bumper yourself though. There are a few money saving ideas out there but remember depending on how bad the dent is, you may be better off going to an experienced garage to get it repaired.

You can pop into your local DIY shop or automotive shop and purchase kits that can fix up to 6 dents for an average price of £20. The easiest and cheapest methods to removing car dents are described below:

Method 1

  • Switch a hairdryer on the dent for 30 seconds to one minute
  • Immediately after, take your air duster containing CO2 and spray
  • Leave for a minute and you will see the dent pop out
  • Wait a few seconds for the spray to clear and wipe clean

Method 2

  • Another method is to use a piece of aluminium foil and place it over the dent
  • Take a lighter and light it over the foil
  • Using an air duster spray over the dent (remove foil first)
  • Just like the above method, the dent will pop out by itself

Method 3

  • Purchase a suction dent puller (it works better on larger dents)
  • Place over dent and pull
  • The dent should then have popped out nicely

Most methods of removing dents using heat like a hairdryer or lighter are not advised by mechanics as overheating the metal can cause the metal to change shape. All these methods have been tried and tested by dents removal experts and have worked for many people but be sure to research and speak to a qualified mechanic if you choose to try one of the above methods.
