Not All Policies Insure You For The Courtesy Car You're Driving So You May Need Something Extra
If you have courtesy car cover as an extra on your insurance policy, this can be a lifesaver especially if you have children to drop off school or rely heavily on your car to get out and about to go to work. If you are to ever get involved in a car accident that was either your fault or not, your insurer will give you a courtesy car if that's included in your policy.
Do I need courtesy car insurance cover?
In most cases it is not necessary to get insurance to cover a courtesy car. If you have fully comprehensive insurance policy on your own vehicle, most of the time it will also cover driving a courtesy car. If you were to have an accident whilst driving a courtesy car and were at fault, you will lose your no claims bonus and may have to pay a hefty excess. When you take out an insurance policy, it may be worth asking if it covers a courtesy car as well. If you were to have a courtesy car delivered whilst your own is in a garage, you should read over the contract before signing and make sure that you are covered before sitting in the vehicle.
It is unlikely that an insurance company will refuse to add on courtesy car cover as an optional extra but if it did happen then you would have to buy an additional insurance policy to cover the courtesy car. The good thing about having another car insurance policy is that you can have it on a short term basis covering you only when you need it. In some cases a courtesy car is only required for a few days but in more serious cases, it can be a long term rental. It doesn't matter either way as courtesy car cover can be very flexible.
Purchasing courtesy car insurance cover?
Temporary or short term insurance covercan cost as little as £6 a day and you can cancel at any time; this comes in handy if your car is being repaired and the estimated repair time is only a precautionary measure. Some companies charge you a fixed priced like £10 for as long as you need it but beware though as it can have a high excess of £500 in some cases.
