With so many people still opting to drive to work and their local towns, it makes sense to buy not only a fuel efficient car but a good commuter car. Not only do you want an economical car but also one you know you will have no problem parking. Many people who have 4x4's, estate cars or SUV's will have to park in a multi storey car park due to off road parking not having big enough spaces for parallel parking.

What to look for in a commuter car?

  • Fuel efficiency
  • Comfortable seats
  • Style and size
  • Most importantly cost

If you're looking to purchase a commuter car, the chances are you already have a family car large enough to do your weekly shopping, school run and family trips out. So if you're purchasing a commuter car, you only need it for getting to and from work any maybe the occasional drive into Central London or other busy towns.

Smart car: the smart car is proving to be a very popular choice for people of all ages, it's small and compact and you can easily switch lanes due to the fact it's only half the size of an average car. You will also save a lot of money on petrol but with a max speed of 60mph, it may not be suitable for all commuters.

Nissan Micra: the micra has come a long way since it was first launched in 1982. With its new shape introduced in 2003, it has since proved very popular with older drivers but also newly qualified drivers as insurance premiums are usually very low. Engine sizes start from 1.0L up to 1.6L and a sport version or convertible is also available on the market.

Renault Clio: the clio is not much different from the Micra cheap to buy, easy to park and an all over great little run around.

Toyota Yaris: small, cheap, comfortable and easy to park.

Volkswagen: the most expensive of the commuter cars but really for those who like speed. Due to a bigger engine size, the insurance will be more expensive and fuel will cost more especially if you go for the diesel version.

Most people tend to go for japanese cars as they are the most reliable and parts are easier to get hold of. If you're not sure what you like, why not have a quick nosey when out and about? You may see one that appeals to you. Always test drive the vehicle you would like to purchase before making any commitments so you know exactly what to expect as relying on what others tell you may not always be the truth.
