There are some makes and models which are more prone to problems such as breakdown, power steering and braking. Before buying a car, most people do a little bit of research but if you are one of the unlucky few who haven't done their homework properly, then extended car warranty could save you thousands. Modern cars come with many features as standard these days such as DVD entertainment, heated seats, air conditioning and navigation system - the more features you have the more expensive it would be should anything need replacing. If the car you have tends to have expensive parts, then this would be another reason to consider extended warranty as you may pay more than the warranty's worth in parts alone. All new cars come with 3 year warranty for free. During this time, if you have any problems or parts that need replacing, the warranty will cover it at no extra expense to you. After the original warranty expires, if you were to encounter any problems, then you will have to pay out of your own pocket. So if you own a top end vehicle, extending your warranty may come in handy. You don't have to buy extended car warranty straight after the original expires but bear in mind that the older the vehicle is, the more you will pay for the extended warranty.

How to get your warranty extended?

There are currently two ways to getting extended warranty - the first is through the manufacturer and the second through a third party company. They both cover pretty much the same things but with the manufacturers' warranty you will have to go to their garage. With a third party company warranty, you will be given a choice of the nearest approved garages for repairs; you may have to pay the bill and claim it back from the company. When you have decided which company you would like to go for, do some research and read reviews, check how long the company has been on business and if they are reliable before committing yourself.

Remember that not all cars can qualify for extended warranty and not everything is covered. Brake pads, belts and tyres are not usually covered as this is down to normal wear and tear.
