Now that you've decided to become an independent driving instructor, one of the first things you must do to drum up business is advertising. Advertising on the driving school car is probably the most effective and there are two ways you can do this. The first is to get a car sign that is usually stuck across the doors so people can see when they drive past and the second is a trim sign for the roof. Once you have a car with professional driving school advertising, you will soon start to get customers. Additional to this you may also want to purchase more items that will further improve clientele or help new drivers pass their tests.

What driving school supplies do I need?

Dual controls - many driving schools such as AA, Red and BSM have dual controls which can help prevent accidents when teaching inexperienced drivers. By having dual controls fitted you could also bring your driving instructor insurance premium down.
'L' plates - you will need to alert other drivers that you have a learner in the vehicle so they can keep their distance and be patient. 'L' plates are essential in preventing accidents through impatient drivers trying to overtake or doing dangerous manoeuvres.
Signs - there are a variety of different signs that you can buy to warn other drivers or indicate what you teach. For example you can buy a sticker that asks drivers behind to keep their distance and to be patient as there is a new driver trying to learn. You can even buy stickers showing the pass plus course to alert people that you are also qualified in this area.

There are also non essential items that you can purchase to make life easier such as:

Appointment cards - you can buy pre-printed appointment cards that bear the company logo or your name. This can come in handy when you have many clients to keep track of as you also have a handy appointment book for your own records.
Mock driving test report - when you feel your client is nearly ready, you can use a mock driving test report to make a note of any problem areas and areas that need more practice. By having a pre-printed sheet of instructions, you can teach a lesson with ease without any prior planning.
Show me tell me mock - have a pre-printed sheet to test pupils on their show me tell me answers and by having a pre-printed instruction leaflet you can keep it and refer back to it later.
Not turned up cards - if you have a pupil that doesn't turn up to a lesson, you can pop a 'not turned up card' through the letterbox so you can charge for the lesson afterwards. This can also count as proof if you need to pursue them for 'loss of earnings' later.
Visual teaching aids - you may also want to purchase laminated sheets that show different road signs, road markings and speed limits. You can also get clutch manuals and colourful manoeuvre guides that you use to show students how to reverse round a corner, parallel park and a turn in the road.

These are just some of the driving aids and supplies you may wish to purchase if you want to become a driving instructor. Although not all are essential, many do become useful and by being organised you will also be seen as professional and recommended to friends through clients.
