A significant number of motorists find themselves in situations where they face huge car insurance premiums because they have been previously banned from driving. The disqualification itself may have arisen from dangerous driving, speeding, totting up points, drink driving or any other breach of the Highway Code. This makes banned driver insurance a hard thing to find and expensive as well.

Many times when you are banned from driving, you are also required to retake your driving test and since each new day may make the actual test a little harder even for people who know how to drive, it can be quite a challenge to go through all the necessary steps to get back your driving licence. Once this is done though, the hurdle is not over yet because insurers may decide not to quote you for insurance purposes or are likely to increase your premiums so much that you'll think it's not even worth the hassle.

_Some insurers however may take into consideration your previous no claims bonus (NCB)_and adjust the quote based on that provided that the NCB is traceable on a policy within the last 2 years. This means that if you had 8 years worth of NCB before and you had a driving ban for 3 years, then you can say goodbye to any discounts because you will have lost all of the NCB.

For someone to be disqualified from driving and receive an enforceable ban, obviously the court must have been convinced that the driver is a threat to other road users and letting him drive is not safe for everyone else as well as himself. Under these circumstances, car insurance companies will consider the convicted driver a very high risk applicant - one who is more likely to make claims on their policy and therefore more of a liability to the business. Hence cheap quotes become a distant memory.

The common reasons for getting banned from driving are for convictions relating to speeding offences (SP30/SP50), drink driving (DR10), drug driving (DR80), not having the minimum level of insurance on your car (IN10), failing to obey traffic signals (TS10), dangerous driving (DD10) and for totting up offences. It is important to understand that these offences can be catastrophic in some cases and they can be easily avoided if you really wanted to and when you think about the consequences, it is not really worth trying any of them.

If you are a reformed convicted driver and are looking for cheap banned driver insurance, then you cannot go with mainstream insurers because they will either decline quoting you or charge you more for the premiums. You will need to go to specialist companies which deal with drivers who do not necessarily have a clean licence and can offer you a reasonable quote based on your convictions' history.
