If you own an ice cream van, you will know how difficult and expensive it is to insure especially as ice cream is only sold a handful of times throughout the year due to unpredictable weather. Most people who have an ice cream van will also have another permanent job that's more reliable and generates a fixed monthly income. Ice cream van sellers in the UK however are at a disadvantage due to the weather as it rains a lot and bad weather can be crippling. Generally ice cream starts selling from spring until late September if the weather permits.

In the last few years, ice cream and lollies bought in shops and supermarkets have gotten cheaper; a box of 10 choc ice sell for £1 and a box of 10 assorted flavoured ice lollies sell for £1. Since you can't beat a truly creamy ice cream from the ice cream man, many health conscious families are starting to make their own so the demand for an ice cream van decreases each year.

You should get short term ice cream van insurance as you never know how the weather will fair in the coming months. Short term insurance allows you to insure for as little as a day or month. I don't think this has been thought about when it comes to insuring vans selling ice cream.

Why do ice cream vans need to be insured?

It is a legal obligation for all vehicles on the road to have insurance to cover third party as a minimum. Ice cream vendors are no exception and their vans could be targeted by young teens looking for an easy theft. The chances are ice cream van owners will empty the van in the evening but it doesn't stop youngsters messing around. Sweets are also sold and kept in the van, so it could also be targeted for this reason.

Getting away with an ice cream van theft will be very hard as there are not as many of these vehicles as there used to be. It won't stop people from trying though - ice cream van thefts will increase during peak season when the days start to warm up. There may be a thief who wants to make some easy money before fleeing but the chances of getting away with it are slim.

Due to there being little competition for ice cream van insurance, finding a good and cheap quote may be hard. The best thing to do is to find an insurance company that specialises in this field to ensure you get the best quote.
