Insuring your motorcycle is not just about getting you protected in case something nasty happens to you or your bike but it is in fact against the law to ride a vehicle with no insurance. While the age limit to ride a bike is 16, the person must be 17 or above to ride a bike with an engine capacity greater than 50cc. People with a provisional driving licence must have a compulsory basic training certificate (CBT) to ride a bike. Motorcycles can be broadly categorised into scooter, quad, moped, naked, custom, classic, delivery etc while manufacturers range from Aprilia, BMW, Harley Davidson, KTM to name a few. Motorcycle insurance can include general conditions such as accident coverage and driver injury or can be tailor made based on the person's desires like multi bike coverage or theft/fire coverage etc.

The insurance coverage is based mainly on the type of bike that you have (bike parts of older models tend to be more difficult to replace and hence are more expensive as well as those having more powerful engines), how it is used (the more often it is used, the more likely is the case of an accident), how it is stored and security means (insurers will want to know about this because the higher is the risk of theft, the more you will have to pay), where you live (your home location may give the insurer an idea of how likely you can get involved in an accident/theft/loss and thus the fee will hike up), previous claims (whether you have done so in the past and this may cause the premium to rise; while some companies deal with these specific cases, others do not or have a specific time period to be eligible for coverage), your personal details (sex: men are seen to be less careful drivers, age: those under 25 years old are seen to ride more dangerously, occupation: sportsman; in all these cases you will be required to pay more), additional drivers (if there are more people riding the bike than you, coverage has to be extended and thus rises) and excess that you are expected to cover.

Overall coverage can be in different forms depending on what you are looking for. It can include third party coverage only where a victim or property can be paid back in case of an accident but the bike itself is not covered (worth considering if the bike does not cost a lot), theft and fire coverage (the risk of theft is always high for motorcycles, so the higher the coverage the better) or you can go for a full coverage insurance which includes your protection as well as that of your bike in case of accidents. Most policies are tailor made though according to what you want so always make sure that your contract covers what you want like adding coverage for legal purposes as in pursuing compensation in accidents where you were not at fault, breakdown cover where some mechanic can repair your bike on site and drop you off somewhere, personal accident cover like coverage for medical fees or inability to work.

There are a number of companies offering bike insurance like specialist ones (based on motorcycle type) or generalists and while some agencies provide quotes on site only, others offer online quotes too. It is advised to check out a few companies to find the cheapest and more appropriate insurance before getting it. Whether you use your bike just for a casual ride or to go to work, you want it to be insured so that you know that there will be a way out if any awkward situation pops up. Motorcycle insurance is important because the peace of mind that you get is undoubtedly a lot more than what you pay in premiums.
