As we all know, even disabled drivers are allowed to have driving lessons in specially adapted cars for their disability. Although we don't see advertisements showing car insurance for the disabled, it is nevertheless a growing industry as more people with special needs decide to take on driving in an attempt to become less dependent. Disabled drivers are a lower risk category when it comes to insuring so insurers are most likely to accept if you are a blue badge holder. Having a specially adapted car means you could also save up to 35% off the annual premium.

As many disabled car drivers need an assistant, if you also purchase insurance for personal assistants and carers, business use is included on the policy for free. In the last 10 years insurance for disabled drivers has greatly improved. Not only have insurers seen the need to offer disabled vehicle insurance but there are companies that offer insurance only for specially adapted vehicles. It can sometimes be very hard to find a car insurance company that will take on your adapted vehicle due to disability and due to lack of knowledge, you may pay over the odds.

Choosing a disabled car insurance provider

The best thing to do is to go with an insurance provider that specialises in disabled car insurance. Not only will you benefit from others being covered for driving the car for you but in the event of theft or breakdown the insurance company will have experience in dealing with such situations. There is no evidence to suggest that disabled drivers pay higher insurance premiums because of a disability. It is also illegal for a car insurance company to charge you extra because of a disability unless they can prove it's justified as stated in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. When you contact insurance companies, make sure you know your rights and if you find they're being funny with you then hang up and take your custom elsewhere. There are many car insurance companies which cater to people with disabilities and will be happy to insure your vehicle.

In the news recently

A disabled driver is taking insurance companies to court because they failed to provide him a quote for his adapted vehicle that was a necessity for him to travel independently. He has successfully received an undisclosed sum from Insure and Go who failed to give him a quote on his adapted vehicle. The case has a strong point on discrimination for disabled drivers and if Mr A wins, then this could change disabled insurance policies forever.
